Growing vegetables hydroponically removes the two things that limit soil culture: uneven nutrition and soil-borne disease. Every plant sits in the same circulating solution, so the crop in the far corner of the bay is fed exactly like the crop at the door. Roots come out clean, and the growing area can be replanted immediately after harvest.
Leafy vegetables are the classic fit: lettuce, spinach, rocket, pak choi and herbs such as basil and coriander. They have short cycles and compact root systems, so NFT channels work well and several crops can be in the house at once. Heavier fruiting crops - tomato, cucumber and pepper - are better on a substrate system where the roots have more support.
Channels or beds run in rows with a working aisle between them, at a height that keeps the crop within reach. Because the crop is not tied to a planting season, bays can be staged: seed one section, harvest another, and keep the house productive all year. Spacing is set by the crop and by the light reaching the lowest leaves.
Daily work is to check tank level, pump and return flow, and to keep channels clear of root debris. Nutrient strength and pH are checked on a schedule rather than by eye. Because the solution is re-circulated, keeping soil and dirty tools out of the bay matters more than it does in ground culture.
